The Habitat

A lush mosaic of shady forest, treetop lookouts, rock promontories, stream sides, bamboo thickets, sunny meadows, forested pathways, wading pools, and retreats provides animals with a great variety of habitat. Congo Gorilla Forest includes both living and 55 fabricated trees, providing treetop access for lowland gorillas, the most arboreal subspecies of gorilla. Hidden from public view within sculpted trees are electronically-timed feeders to stimulate exploration and involve the gorillas in natural foraging behaviors. More than 15,000 plants, representing 400 species, create Congo Gorilla Forest's dense and mysterious landscape.

The exhibit includes two seemingly contiguous outdoor, intertwined gorilla exhibits - 50,000 square feet in all. Mandrills, DeBrazza's monkeys, and red river hogs will live in outdoor environs, with interior exhibits designed for Wolf's monkeys, reptiles, fish, and invertebrates.
