Support & Impact

Congo Gorilla Forest is a true partnership between the private and public sectors. A total of $14.45 million has been committed by the City of New York through the Mayor's Office, the City Council, and the Office of the Bronx Borough President.

An additional $2.5 million for educational materials and interpretive programs was based upon work supported by the National Science Foundation under Grant No. ESI-9614738. More than $30 million to date has come from the private sector to fund capital costs and to begin building endowments for the exhibits. It is anticipated that nearly 700,000 of the Bronx Zoo's 2.2 million annual visitors will experience this simulated ecosystem.

Through Congo Gorilla Forest the Wildlife Conservation Society seeks to bring the African rain forest to life, as a teaching tool for natural science, using the beauty and majesty of gorillas and other animals to teach conservation, and offering ways to assure the survival of this most important ecosystem into the next century.

The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) has been on the front lines of wildlife and habitat conservation since its founding in 1895. WCS manages over 300 field conservation projects in 52 countries and environmental education curricula adopted nationally and in 15 nations. Through its celebrated wildlife parks in the United States — the Bronx Zoo, the New York Aquarium, and the Wildlife Centers at Central Park, Queens, and Prospect Park — WCS is able to provide the public the opportunity to enjoy our wildlife heritage as well as learn about and participate in the survival of wildlife and natural habitats.
